Who runs this
mithian coding is run by Oliver, in Kent, UK, at mithian.net. For anything about your data, email business@mithian.net.
The short version
- You can use the whole course without an account. Your progress is then kept only in your own browser and nothing about it is sent to us.
- If you make an account, we keep your name, email, password (scrambled, so not even we can read it) and your progress.
- There are no adverts, no tracking, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts on these pages.
- If you join a class, its teacher sees your progress. You can leave at any time.
- You can download everything or delete your account yourself, from your account page.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email address, password hash | To give you an account, sign you in and send password-reset emails | Providing the service you asked for (contract) |
| Progress: lessons, answers' results, checkpoint scores, review schedule, XP, badges, settings | So you can carry on where you left off, on any device | Contract |
| Code you write in exercises and save in the playground | So your work is there when you come back | Contract |
| Answers sent for verification, including your code for verified exercises | So the server can confirm your work and, if you join a class, show your teacher what you did | Contract; legitimate interests (trustworthy results) |
| Class memberships, leaderboard nickname and visibility | To run the classes you choose to join | Contract |
| When you were last active | For your teacher's view, and to remove long-unused accounts | Legitimate interests |
| IP address and browser details in the web server's logs, and in short-lived memory for rate limits | To keep the site secure and stop abuse | Legitimate interests (security) |
Your Python code runs inside your own browser. It only reaches us when you save it while signed in, or when it is sent to be verified.
Who can see your data
- You.
- Teachers of classes you join see your name, email address, verified progress (including the code behind verified exercises), checkpoint scores and when you were last active. Before you join, the page says exactly this. Your playground programs are never shared.
- Other students in a class see your first name and initial (or a nickname you choose) and your points on the class leaderboard, if the teacher has switched it on. You can hide yourself from it.
- The person who runs the site can see account data when it is needed to run, support or secure the service.
- Our hosting provider, Namecheap, Inc., stores the data on its servers in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States. This means your data is transferred outside the UK.
We don't sell your data or share it with anyone else, unless the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Account data stays until you delete your account, which removes it straight away.
- Accounts that haven't been used for three years are deleted automatically.
- Password-reset links expire after an hour.
- Web server logs are kept by the hosting provider for a limited time for security.
Cookies and storage
We use one cookie, which keeps you signed in. Your browser's local storage keeps your progress and settings when you aren't signed in, and a few display preferences such as the theme. These are needed for the site to work, so there is no cookie banner.
Children
The course is meant for people aged 13 and over. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before making an account.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, download or delete your data, and you can object to how we use it. Most of this you can do yourself: download everything with Download my data on your account page, change your details there, or delete your account. For anything else, email business@mithian.net. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this notice changes in a way that matters, we'll say so on the site. The date at the top shows the latest version.
